For all major emergencies in Italy, dial 112. dispatchers will connect you with the appropriate authorities.

This is multilingual. They can trace your location. This is recommended for any situation requiring police intervention (including theft or an accident), firefighters or an ambulance. 

The Italian Pharmacist is highly trained and authorized to diagnose basic ailments, ear infections, sinus, etc and provide antibiotics US doctors would prescribe. Feel free to stop at the Farmacia to talk with a pharmacist, ask questions before making an appointment with a doctor.

Look for a Green "+" sign! That is a Farmacia ~ The Pharmacist.

There are 2 types of hospitals in Italy, Private and Public. 

Private Hospitals are very expensive, you have to be referred by a select Doctor and all expenses must be paid in full by the patient. 

A public hospital is very economical, expenses are EXTREMELY minimal and what your insurance does not cover, you have to pay in full. 

INSURANCES

Confirm before your travel if you are covered internationally.  US Medicaid and Medicare does not cover claims in Italy.  You can purchase travelers' insurance. Google, AAA and AARP are wonderful sources. 

STEP ~SMART TRAVELER ENROLLMENT PROGRAM

is a FREE service provided by the U.S. Department of State registers your trip with the nearest embassy or consulate.

When you register with the STEP program you receive email weather, security alerts and safety conditions for your area.  Also, it alerts your closest embassy or consulate in the event of natural disasters, crisis or family emergencies.
